ETV Educational Broadband Service
ETV has the most effective educational infrastructure of any public broadcaster in the nation, serving all 85 school districts. The current system uses special closed-circuit TV channels and delivers educational programming from the State Department of Education, PBS and ETV.
The FCC recently mandated that ETV's instructional channels transition to digital; so much of the spectrum previously taken up in analog form will now be freed up for broadband services for the entire state to utilize.
The South Carolina Broadband Technology and Communications Study Committee recently explored how the state utilizes broadband services, and investigated the future possibilities of implementing new wireless services.
Rural areas that currently don't have access to high-speed Internet connections could receive the same broadband web services urban areas take for granted. Students, state agencies and citizens will be able to travel anywhere in the state and connect to the services available through the new Broadband Services. With the advent of virtual schools, and the state having to compete on an international scale, the state's future EBS system can put South Carolina at the forefront of education and economic impact. Stay tuned for the state's transformation to EBS and wireless broadband Internet services.
