05/09/2008 (Friday at noon) Dr. Nicholas Butler is an archivist with the Charleston County Public Library, as well as an author, a musicologist, and a musician. For this visit, however, he's wearing a different hat as he tells us of the Mayor's Walled City Taskforce of Charleston. He'll tell us about efforts to rediscover Charleston's history as the oldest walled settlement built by the British in colonial times.

Commission Calls for MLK Statue's Redesign
The sculpture of Martin Luther King Jr. intended for a memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is too "confrontational," according to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts. The commission's approval is necessary for any monument or memorial in the capital. The commission says the sculpture needs to be reworked.

Myanmar Keeps Relief Workers at Bay
After almost a week of refusal following a deadly cyclone, Myanmar has agreed to allow one U.S. cargo plane to make a delivery of aid. The government there is still refusing entry to worldwide aid agencies. Gordon Bacon of the International Rescue Committee is one of the few who have been able to enter the country.

Election Held in Face of Disaster in Myanmar
The aftermath of the cyclone is still a morbid reality for millions in Myanmar, but the lax government-sponsored relief efforts haven't deterred the reigning junta. It went ahead with plans for a referendum on Saturday.

Timberlake: Refresher course
More than 70 new owners took to the Timberlake golf course near Chapin with yard tools instead of clubs Friday. The landscaping started a face-lift of the course by adjoining homeowners who bought it May 1 to protect it from development. Those who pruned bushes, weeded sand traps and planted flowers around tees called their work the first step in making the purchase pay off.“It was looking a little shabby,” said Phil Baker, one of nearly 300 buyers. “It’s not a pristine course like the pros play. Eventually, it’d be nice to be like that.”The $3 million purchase of the 143.5-acre course is a safe bet, others said.
